Opportunities for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts

To Attend North Carolina Outward Bound

North Carolina Outward Bound maintains two base camps in Western North Carolina.  The school uses camping, orienteering, rock climbing, whitewater canoeing and other outdoor experiences to teach resourcefulness, group cooperation, leadership, and personal self-confidence.  The student spends 21 days as a member of a close-knit crew of up to 12 participants plus two instructors.  Those that have completed this adventure say it is the most unforgettable and personally useful experience of their young lives.

For 2010, North Carolina Outward Bound has set aside six spaces in the summer course for the use of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of Western North Carolina.  This is not an official BSA or GSUSA event, but rather, a special opportunity made available to WNC Scouts.  Any registered and active Scout may apply for one of these scholarships and attend for little cost.  Without a scholarship, the tuition would be up to $3300 for a 21-day course.  A list of the 21-day courses follows (14-day courses are also available; refer to the website www.ncobs.org/courses for those dates):

Scouts 14 to 18 years of age may apply.  Scouts over 18 may apply for a partial scholarship to a 28-day course.  Applications are accepted anytime but must be received by February 19, 2010.  Do not send applications for Scout scholarship directly to Outward bound; but rather send to:

                                                            Franklin, NC  28734-3733

As in the past, scholarships will be awarded to those Scouts who have a strong commitment to stay with and succeed in this challenging experience.  The goal is to offer awards to 3 girls and 3 boys.  We will interview all Scouts applicants in March.  At that time, successful applicants will pay a non-refundable application fee of $100.  Final acceptance by the school is based on your medical exam.
